Knowledge Age, Jobs, Jobs, Jobs
Friday, 25 September 2009 10:24
So the Information Age is here and global. Think about it. From the printing press to the global Internet, information has gone from the hands of royalty and rulers, to being accessible to everyone, globally and free (not including the cost of internet access which you can get for free at a public library). So what's next? The 'Knowledge Age'. Knowledge is just the creative and useful employment of information.
The Knowledge Age has started and knowledge will follow the same path, from being controlled by the few and powerful, to being accessible to everyone, globally and practically for free. Check out how many university courses and degrees are now being offered on-line for free. The IP Boot Camp initiative is just one micro part of this Knowledge Age momentum. Do you remember the Star Trek episode where they removed Spock's brain, and Bones had to put on a helmet, and within a few minutes had the knowledge to perform the surgery? Well, not so far fetched and sooner than you think. But first let's make knowledge accessible to all and free. What will come next? Well, the 'Wisdom Age', but that's for another article.
How about jobs? The Internet is a cool thing, and the hardware and software that make it work are amazing and almost automagic. But don't let that fool you. It takes an army of IP professionals to keep it all going smoothly, and we are just now scratching the surface of what the Internet will become. Now with the coming of IPv6 and Multicast or some variant (IPTV anyone,.. ya that reminds me, when am I going to be able to watch TV when I want and only pay for what I use, not a monthly fee for 100 to 500 channels that I will never watch? ...ranting). We will need another army of newly trained IP professionals to take the Internet to the next level, and that means a ton of new good paying jobs, jobs where you are always learning new things almost on a daily basis. So get started if you haven't already. IP Boot Camp can help.

IP Boot Camp is a non-profit organization made up of IT professionals dedicated to bringing IP (Internet) networking knowledge to everyone.
IpBootCamp.org Objective: Training, Mentoring, Funding
There are three pillars to the IpBootCamp.org objectives: Training, Mentoring, and Funding. The first pillar 'training' involves the delivery of instructor-led 'hands-on' IP Networking training for entry level individuals - preparatory for industry certifications: i.e. N+/CCNA etc and career transitions. The training will be done by qualified volunteers, and the resources required, i.e routers, switches, computers/laptops, training rooms, lunches, marketing/advertising will all be 'gifts in kind' i.e. donated. The training will be 'free' to the (qualified) participants. The second pillar is to provide 'mentoring' to participants and assist them with decision-making, goal setting, and actions in the quest to achieve new skills that will lead to a higher paying job, a career path, and a better life. The third pillar 'funding' is to financially assist participants with the fees associated with certification testing as funding becomes available.

Who are 'qualified' participants?
Tuesday, 22 September 2009 08:51
Right now, due to the pilot nature of the program, a 'qualified' participant is anyone who asks. In most cases, their work or interests will be aligned with an interest in IP networking. The goal of the project is to reach out to participants who need a helping hand due to lack of financial resources, whether during a career transition or just starting out. For example, a young adult who's work opportunities are limited due to lack of skills, or perhaps a middle-aged adult who is in an industry where the demand for their skills is waning.
Ip Boot Camp will help facilitate a path of self-taught certification and eventually job placement. There are thousands of individuals in the IP networking profession making decent salaries who are self-taught. I know this deeply because I am one of them. And there are a ton of free resources on the Internet to accomplish this goal.

What IP Boot Camp is not.
Tuesday, 22 September 2009 09:11
Ip Boot Camp is not a place to get copious amounts of information on IP networking, i.e. we won't require you to read a 500 page text book. Of course, there will be very concise and distilled information, the essence of what you need to know to get through the lab training. The rest of the information you will require to pass your certifications will come from other sources most of which are free. The Internet has thousands of sites dedicated to providing free information on any topic in IP Networking you choose. We will examine some popular sites, the good and the bad. Each individual has a unique learning style so some sites will work better for some than others.
Ip Boot Camp is focused on the 'hands-on'. Kinda like 'flying' a plane. You can go on the Internet to find information on how a plane is built and the principles of lift and drag (the Bernoulli principle), but to learn to fly is very hands-on. IP Networking is the same. You will discover if you have an interest and an aptitude for IP networking. But the motivation has to come from within you. IP Boot Camp will facilitate, mentor and help direct your motivation to acquire new skills, make a career transition, and 'change your life'. I say that because IP networking has been good to me, the opportunities have literally changed my life. Plus it's FUN!!

How to register for IP Boot Camp.
Thursday, 24 September 2009 11:01
Go to the Contact page and click on the contact link for the IP Boot Camp Director. Send an email using the form on that page and include your contact info, and a short paragraph about yourself, why you want to take the course and why you believe you are a 'qualified' participant. If you use your own email, please attach a resume if you have one.
Based on demand from 'qualified' participants, and availability of volunteer facilitators, the IP Boot Camp 'Build the Internet' Lab will be available at least once per month, and possibly once per week. The lab is normally run on a weeknight between 5:00 pm and 9:00 pm at a downtown Toronto location.
You can take the lab as many times as you like, based on availability. Our goal is to have successful lab participants volunteer to be the next generation of lab facilitators. This is all about giving and receiving, we give you the opportunity to learn, and you give it to someone else. And the old adage applies: we learn 10% of what we hear, 20% of what we see, 50% of what we do, and 95% of what we teach. This lab is about doing and teaching.
